"Globalization, Tourism & Development: Mega Events and Urban Tourism"
 

Conference Announcement And Call for Papers

    This conference is intended to foster dialogue among interested actors from the academic, political and industry sectors, about the relations between mega events and urban tourism. The conference is being held at Shanghai after the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and before the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. The focus will be on how international mega events influence the tourism industry in urban areas, including their economic, political, social and cultural impacts.
    The conference also seeks to address issues in event tourism, including all scales of local and international events in cities. Events are considered as important components of urban tourism, which can contribute to raising city profiles, improving economic growth and fostering cultural and political development. The conference, therefore, also provides a platform for discussing the influences and trends in event tourism development around the world.

Themes

    Delegates will have the opportunity to present papers under one or more of nine broad themes within the conference:

Submission of Abstract

    Abstracts of up to 350 words should be sent as e-mail attachments (in MS Word) to Co-Chair Paper Review Committee, Dr. Ning Dang, (ndang2008@gmail.com) or directly upload to the conference official website by 15th May extended to 31th of August 2008. Your abstract should be in English. Following guidelines of submission of abstracts and papers, members of the scientific committee will conduct a double-blind review. Authors of accepted abstracts who intend to submit full papers should do so by the 10th of October 2008. Refereed full papers of the conference will be published as proceedings with an ISBN number. The submission of an abstract or a full paper requires that at least one author attend the Conference to present the paper.

Venue

    This conference will be one of the most significant tourism events to be held in China in 2008. The conference, hosted by the Department of Tourism, East China Normal University, is supported by some of the leading tourism institutions in China as well as by the wider academic and professional research community. The openning ceromony of the conference will be held at the historic campus of East China Normal University, and the closing ceromony will be held at the campus of Shanghai Normal University.

Abstracts:
Presentation abstracts are welcome in the following categories:

• Illustrated (poster) Presentations

Abstracts of up to 350 words should be sent as e-mail attachments (in MS Word) to Dr Ning Dang, (ndang2008@gmail.com) by the 31 of August 2008. Your abstract should be in English with the title of the paper and the author's name(s), affiliation, complete address(s), phone numbers, and email address.

Co-authored submissions should indicate the corresponding author. Please indicate the theme within which you wish your paper to be included. Following submission of your abstract, members of the scientific committee will conduct a double-blind review.

Professor Mike Weed
Professor Mike Weed is Professor of Sport in Society and Director of the Centre for Sport, Physical Education & Activity Research (SPEAR) at Canterbury Christ Church University. He has previously worked in the Institute of Sport & Leisure Policy at Loughborough University and as Director of Research in Sports Culture at the University of North London. He is interested in all areas of the relationship between sport and tourism, but particularly in the motivations and behaviours of active sports tourists and travelling sports spectators, and in the implications of hosting the Olympic Games. Professor Weed is author (with Chris Bull) of Sports Tourism: Participants, Policy and Providers (Elsevier, 2004) and Olympic Tourism (Elsevier, 2008), and Editor of Sport & Tourism: A Reader (Routledge, 2008). He is Editor of the Journal of Sport & Tourism (Taylor & Francis), has Guest Edited issues of European Sport Management Quarterly, European Journal of Sport Science and Psychology of Sport & Exercise, and sits on the Editorial Boards of Qualitative Research in Sport & Exercise and The Qualitative Report. Professor Weed’s research has been funded the Economic and Social Research Council, the Department of Health, UK Sport, Sport England, the Football Association, Coca-Cola Enterprises and the South East England Development Agency, and he has advised regional agencies across the UK on both sports tourism and Olympic-related development. Professor Weed is, at the invitation of the Trustees, a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts and is listed in the World Who’s Who.
