Forum Theme:
Shangri-La, Experience a Visionary Destination;
Explore New Horizons for the Future of Tourism

Shangri-La means the sun and the moon in people’s hearts, and the pronunciation in English comes from the Tibetan dialect. James Hilton’s book published in 1933, Lost Horizon, fascinated everyone about a remote rural place tucked away between mountains and valleys. He called it Shangri-La, a place full of mystery with many beautiful gardens. So the British have used the word “Shangri-La” ever since then. Later, Hollywood bought the book copyright and re-told the story on-screen; the movie became popular around the world. “Shangri-La” has an eternal, peaceful and serene meaning, and symbolizes a spiritual Eden for the soul.
When people travel, it’s not only to view scenery, but also they want to rediscover their inner selves. The ultimate pursuit of tourists is peace and joy. Shangri-La for many tourists is like Mecca and Rome to religious pilgrims; it is a holy land and home for the soul.
Shangri-La will be the permanent site of Asia Tourism Forum. It will use the Forum to gather experts and scholars focus on the delicate nature of the tourism industry to give an impetus to healthy and sustainable development of tourism in Asia and around the world.
The 1st Annual Shangri-LAsia Tourism International Forum has the overall theme of “New Horizons for the Future of Tourism.” The Forum will address the most critical issues facing tourism worldwide in the 2nd decade of the 21st century.
