BIOGRAPHY

Bihu (Tiger) Wu is a Professor specializing in the areas of tourism development, planning and management with Peking University's Urban and Regional Planning Department, College of Urban and Environmental Science. He is also the Director of the Center for Recreation and Tourism Research (CRTR) at Peking University.

Prior to joining the Peking University faculty in 1997 (as post-doctoral fellowship first), he spent 17 years in Shanghai, respectively as a faculty specializing in human geography and tourism planning for 10 years while got a geography Ph.D. degree, and as an undergraduate and graduate (master degree) student for 7 years. In his consulting career, he specialized in city and regional tourism planning and research, domestic tourist market studies, heritage and resort site planning and management, and tourism interpretation research.

Dr. Wu has had a wide variety of experience in tourism studies, training and consulting. Most recently he has conducted training programs and provided tourism planning and development advice in many provinces and municipalities in China. He is a tourism planning consultant to UNWTO (World Tourism Organization). He has been selected to be the team leader of the research group of Master Plan for Tourism Development (MPTD) of Beijing Municipality, the capital city of China. Other cities also choose him as team leader to make their MPTD including Hangzhou, the capital city of East China Zhejiang province; Xi’an, the capital city of North western China Shaanxi province; Chengdu, the capital city of South western China Sichuan province, Dunhuang city, the major attraction along the Silk Road in Gansu province; and the Three Gorges Area. He has also developed several tourism research models among which the so-called Wu’s Curve of Spatial Tourist Market Distribution, and ReBAM (Recreational Belt Around Metropolis) model, are the two most popular ones in his country and beyond. He has been invited to teach or have presentation at many universities or tourism programs in many countries and regions, like Purdue University, University of South Carolina, Texas A&M University in the U.S.; University of Sheffield Hallam in the U.K.; International Graduate Program in Tourism Management, Associazione Istituzione Libera Universita Nuorese, Sardinia, Italy; Rikkyo University in Japan. In Greater China, he has been invited to be keynote speaker at many universities including Taiwan University in Taiwan, Hong Kong Polytechnic University in Hong Kong, and Institute for Tourism Studies in Macau. He is a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Purdue University, U.S.A. in 2000 and 2005. He is also awarded as invited professor for many Universities in mainland China including East China Normal University (as Zijiang Professorship), Harbin Institute of Technology, Xiamen University, Yunnan Normal University, Shaanxi Normal University (as Ph.D. degree supervisor), Southwest China Forestry College, and Harbin Normal University. He has designed and presented the Regional Tourism Planning and Development course for the National Tourism Administration of China (CNTA) as part of its Local Tourism Administration Director Training Program.

Bihu Wu is the author of seven books and editor-in-chief of five books on tourism and geographical studies, of which books authored include: Regional Tourism Planning Principles (China Tourism and Travel Press, 2001; second edition in press in 2008); Local Tourism Development and Management (Science Press, 2000); A Systematic Research on Domestic Tourism Market of China (co-authored with Xu and Qiu, East China Normal University Press, 1999); Popular Hotel Management (co-authored with Ding and Lou, Zhongxin Press, 1997); Cultural Landscape of China (co-authored with Liu, Shanghai People’s Publishing House, 1998; second edition 2004); An Introduction to Geographical Science (co-authored with Wang, Ding et al, Higher Education Press, 1993); and A Historical Geography of North Jiangsu Province (East China Normal University Press, 1996). Books edited include: Regional Tourism Development and Management (co-edited with Chai, Oceanic Press, 1998); Red Tourism Development, Management and Marketing (co-edited with Yu, China Architecture and Building Press, 2006); Tourism and the New Asia: Implications for Research, Policy and Practice (co-edited with Feighery, Tourism Education Press, 2006); Tourism Development and Public Administration (co-edited with Song, China Tourism and Travel Press, 2008); Mega Events and Urban Tourism (co-edited with Dang, International Tourism Studies Association, 2008). Among all his books, Regional Tourism Planning Principles have been reviewed as one of the bests among its kind, Tourism Management 23(2002), pp 639-645, Book review by Alastair Morrison and Liping Cai: “With its unique features, the book distinguishes itself from other texts on tourism planning. These texts include Clare Gunn's; Edward Inskeep's and C. Michael Hall's books on Tourism Planning and Design”.

Dr. Wu has had other seven books published as translator or co-translator, including Recreation Geography (written by Stephen L. J. Smith, Chinese version published by Higher Education Press, 1992), Tourism and Recreation Handbook of Planning and Design (written by Manuel Body-Bovy and Fred Lawson, co-translated with Tang, Chinese version published by China Architecture and Building Press, 2004); Hospitality and Travel Marketing (written by Alastair Morrison, co-translated with Zhu, Dang and Wu, Chinese version published by Publishing House of Electronics Industry, 2004); National and Regional Tourism Planning: Methodologies and Case Studies (written by World Tourism Organization, co-translated with Ji, Chinese version published by Publishing House of Electronics Industry, 2004); Tourism Planning (written by Clare Gunn and Turgut Var, co-translated with Wu and Dang, Chinese version published by Dongbei University of Finance and Economics Press, 2005); Interpretative Master Planning (written by John A. Veverka, co-translated with Guo and Yu, Chinese version printed by China Tourism and Travel Press, 2008); and Investment Analysis for Real Estate Decisions (written by Gaylon E. Greer and Michael D. He has also authored more than 130 articles related to tourism in academic journals.

Dr. Wu is both the Founding Members of the Department of Tourism Management, East China Normal University, and the Center for Recreation and Tourism Research (CRTR), Peking University. He was given The Best University Textbook Award from The National Commission of Higher Education of China. He also was a recipient of The Natural Science Award from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Dr. Wu was selected by the Geographical Society of China as its nominee for The Geographical Sci-Tech Outstanding Youth Award. Twice he was chosen by the Regional Science Association of China as winners of The Outstanding Academic Paper Awards. He was selected as one of the winners of the Geographical Society of China’s Best Paper Award for outstanding tourism research, East China Publishing House Society’s Outstanding Academic Book Award for successful human geographical research. In 1999, he was selected as the recipient of the Best Paper Award for his contributions to tourism market studies by the Editorial Committee of Acta Geographic Sinica. He was selected as one of the Scientific Research Award of Beijing Municipal Government for his contribution to Tourism Development Planning for the city in 2001. Recently, he was selected by a committee sponsored by the organization committee of the 3rd Asia-Pacific Forum for Graduate Students Research in Tourism as the Best Paper Award winner in 2004 titled as Disciplinary Tree and Evolution Characteristics of Tourism Studies: An Analysis on Subject Index of Annals of Tourism Research. In 2004, he has been awarded as Best Post Doctorate of Peking University.

Dr. Wu is active in several major academic associations in his country and the world. He has recently voted as the Secretary General of ITSA, International Tourism Studies Association and actually he is one of the major founding members of the association in 2006. He has served as Chairman of the Regional Tourism Development Research Association of China, Vice Director of the Tourism Geographical Committee at the Geographical Society of China. He served as Board member of Intelligence Strategic Committee and Human Resource Committee Member for Pacific Asia Travel Association. He is one of those active members of ATLAS, ISTTE, and APTA. He also established a tourism studies academic website www.cotsa.com and set a C-trinet network after the University of Hawaii model at http://ctrinet.cotsa.com/

Dr. Wu has served as editorial board member for several journals related to tourism, including China Tourism Research (published in Hong Kong), Tourism, Culture and Communication (published in Australia), Tourism Science (published in Shanghai), Tourism Development Journal (published in Himachal Pradesh University, India), Human Geography (published in Xi’an), and Areal Research and Development (published in Zhengzhou). In 1999, he became a founding member of Editorial Board and Editor-in-Chief of Academic Book Series on Tourism Studies that is sponsored by China Tourism and Travel Press. In 2002, Dr. Wu was invited as Editor-in-Chief of Translation Book Series of Tourism and MICE sponsored by Publishing House of Electronics Industry. In 2006, he co-edited a textbook series with sponsorship from CRUP (China Renmin University Press) in Beijing.

The main focus of Tiger's research are city and regional tourism planning, destination marketing and planning, recreation and tourism geography, cultural impact of tourism development and cultural landscape of tourist resorts. The more specific current areas of interest are tourism planning theory, ReBAM (recreational belt around metropolitan districts) models, socio-cultural impact of tourism in ethnical regions, spatial structure of tourism development, heritage site studies, ecotourism and sustainable development in tourism industry, image building and destination branding, tourist movement behavior studies, market segmentation for special tourism and recreation projects, outdoor recreation and outdoor education research, environmental education and tourism interpretation.
